A driver was recently killed on Interstate 90 close to Kittitas. The accident in question occurred because the driver was racing another vehicle when he lost control of his automobile. A report by law enforcement states that the driver's vehicle began to slide sideways, struck a rock bank located in the median, and rolled. The driver died at the scene of the accident. This event is just one of the many examples of street racing accidents that have occurred in Washington state over the last few years.
Street racing is a particularly deadly type of activity because it encourages motor vehicle operators to drive at speeds much greater than those that are safe for traveling on public roads. This activity is so dangerous that not just the lives of motor vehicle operators are in jeopardy, but also the people who are watching the race and pedestrians who might be located nearby. Given the significant speed involved in street racing, accidents of this nature are more likely to be severe and frequently result in serious injuries. As a result, it is a wise idea for all motorists to learn about the dangers created by speed racing as well as to obtain the assistance of seasoned legal counsel.
Street Racing is Increasingly Common
Racing is an inherently dangerous activity, but racing tracks are the safest locations on which to conduct this activity. For several reasons, however, racers are turning away from track racing and beginning to prefer open road racing. One of the main reasons why many racers prefer open roads is that they claim there is an extra adrenaline rush that arises from performing an illegal activity.
The Dangers Associated with Street Racing
Street racing poses many dangers that can lead to serious accidents. Some of the various hazards that arise from the significant speeds and recklessness involved with street racing include the following:
- Decreased reaction times to avoid pedestrians and vehicles.
- Inability to safely turn or maintain control of a vehicle throughout curves.
- Increased risk of skidding off of roads.
- Increased rollover risks.
These risks can significantly impact the lives of motor vehicle drivers, resulting in life-changing injuries and even fatalities.
Injuries Associated with Street Racing
Some of the most common injuries that result from street racing include:
- Broken bones.
- Burns.
