Four Steps to Avoid Motorcycle Crashes

Posted by Russell West | Jun 17, 2021 | 0 Comments

Spokane law enforcement is investigating a deadly motorcycle crash that occurred in May 2021. A motorcyclist is reported to have struck a car off of Beacon Avenue and Indian Trail. Additional details about what caused the crash remain uncertain. The motorcyclist died at the scene of the crash. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been involved in the crash. Additional investigation into how the crash occurred is still ongoing.

Operating a motorcycle can present an unparalleled thrill, but it can also be extremely dangerous. The United States Department of Transportation reports that in 2016, motorcyclists were 28 times more likely to die in crashes than people in vehicles. Consequently, 5,029 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2016, which marks a 5.1% increase from 2015. It is a good idea for motorcyclists to understand what they can do to reduce their chances of ending up in an accident. To avoid becoming another casualty, try to remain safe when operating your motorcycle. The following are some helpful tips that you can follow to make sure that you operate your motorcycle safely.

Participate in a Safety Course

A safety course teaches you how to best operate a motorcycle to keep yourself and others safe. While attending these classes, you will also learn what actions to take to respond to various riding situations that might occur. Remember, driving a motorcycle requires both good skill and judgment, and participating in safety classes can help you achieve these goals.

Inspect the Weather Before Riding

Adverse weather conditions including rain and snow can make it difficult to safely operate a motorcycle. Driving in these conditions is dangerous for motorcyclists because you have less traction than larger vehicles and visibility is also reduced. If the weather is at all a concern, stay home or take the car instead.

Wear the Appropriate Clothing

Motorcycle gear plays an important role in protecting riders from injuries as well as the elements. Motorcyclists should wear clothing like helmets, jackets, gloves, and leather parents or chaps while riding. Make sure to dress in layers to adjust to changing weather that might occur throughout the day.

Remain Visible

Motorcyclists should remember that they are often not visible to other drivers. A large number of motorcycle accidents occur because other vehicle drivers simply do not spot the motorcyclist in time. Make sure to drive with your headlights on, even during the day. You should also make sure to wear reflective clothing and always use the appropriate signals.
